  3. What kind of contractual agreement did Stephanie make? As the original creator and copyright owner, she's got the inherent power over her work. Alex saying he's technically her boss.... when she's the one that brought them the product (manuscript). They didn't hire her, she hired them, and if you remember Alex is the one wanting to publish it, taking all the actions, talking her into it... and now he's treating her as an employee rather than giving her the respect as an independent contractor. So many publishers try to take all the power like this, but creators inherently have the power and need to be careful about the contracts they sign... negotiate, make their own contracts with their own expectations.
